Vijayawada, Mar 30 (UNI) Nine members of the banned CPI (Maoist), including party Central Committee member (CCM) and secretary of Andhra Odisha Border Special Economic Zone (AOBSZC) Chelluri Narayana Rao alias Suresh, surrendered before Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta here on Monday. The 55-year-old Maoist leader Narayana Rao alias Suranna, was actively associated with the then People's War Group (PWG) for over three decades. He hails from Bathupuram village in Vajrapukotturu mandal of Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district. The surrendered Maoists were produced before the media. Narayana Rao had joined the PWG in 1989-90 and steadily rose through the ranks, gaining prominence as an expert in military operations. During the last three decades, he played a vital role in strengthening Maoist activities in the Andhra-Odisha border region. The surrendered Maoist was facing many criminal cases in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with rewards announced for his capture. Narayana Rao, who joined the Maoist movement in 1990, participated in some major offences, including the killing of the then MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA Siveri Someswara Rao in the combined Visakhapatnam district in 2018 and the murder of three policemen. Addressing the media on the occasion, DGP Harish Kumar Gupta said the surrendered Maoists handed over a large number of arms including rifles. The DGP clarified that there were seven exchanges of fire between the police and Maoists in which 18 Maoists were killed including the Maoist leader Hidma. The police arrested 31 Maoists including three Action Team members and 106 Maoists surrendered before the police. Speaking on the occasion, Maoist Narayana Rao said that the government's welfare schemes are reaching the tribal people and Maoist movement is going to vanish completely. "As per the changing situation, we have decided to eschew arms and join the mainstream," he said.
