Chennai, Mar 30 (UNI) Soon after Shortly after filing their nomination papers on the opening day today for the April 23 elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin held a roadshow in his Kolathur constituency, even as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Founder and actor-politician Vijay in his maiden electoral foray, hit the campaign trail in Perambur constituency and blamed the ruling DMK for failing to ensure the safety of women and children and control the drug menace in the State. Mr Stalin, who is seeking a record fourth win from Kolathur from where he had won the previous three elections in 2011, 2016 and 2021 and was the only represenative from this constituency to enter the Assembly, released a book on the developmental works he had carried out for the constituency and held a road show. After filing his papers, Mr Stalin greeted the cadres of the DMK and alliance parties, who had lined up all along the route, by standing in an open jeep and waving to them. Speaking to reporters, he expressed confidence of a decisive victory, stating that the people of Kolathur would once again elect him with a big margin. Describing the electoral fight as a battle between Tamil Nadu and Delhi, he said, "Our victory is bright. With the overwhelming support that I am receiving this time, it will be a massive victory for our alliance." He also said that he would definitely win for a fourth term from Kolathur and exuded confidence of DMK retaining power breaking the second term jinx and form the government for the seventh time. Kolathur, a small constituency--which came into being in 2011--in the northernmost corner of Chennai, has become a star constituency after Stalin became the Chief Minister in 2021 having won thrice in succession. Meanwhile, Vijay, soon after filing his nomination papers in Perambur constituency in North Chennai, launched his poll campaign, drawing surging crowds and charged the DMK with pushing the state on a downward spiral and making women's safety precarious. "For five years Stalin Sir had control of the Police Department. When basic security could not be ensured, why should we not throw this government out of power? With loads and loads of looted cash they will try to bribe you. Take that and blow the "Whistle" (TVK poll symbol) in their ears," he said. Beginning from Perambur, Vijay's convoy took nearly two hours to cover the short stretch to Kolathur for campaigning, repeatedly getting stuck at key junctions as supporters thronged all along the route. This prompted TVK to lodge a complaint with Chief Electoral Officer ms Archana Patnaik blaming the police for not providing adequate security for Vijay's campaign, which was attended by a massive crowd. In the complaint, TVJ Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar said there was zero traffic management despite rior approval and said that the lapse posed risks to public saety and disrupted legitimate campaigning. Despite obtaining proper permission, there was absolutely no police protection or traffic regulation when Vijay was travelling between campaign venues, creating an unsafe situation where the convoy could not move," he said. He urged the Election Commission to immediately intervene and directthe authorities to ensure adequate security and traffic management, and take swift action against officials who failed in their duty. Alleging bias, he said permission for campaignin from open jeep was denied to Vijay while it was being granted to the Chief Minister. "Such one-sided actions was a mockery of democracy", he added. Later he campaigned in Kolathur and canvassed votes forTVK candidate V S Babu, a known DMK face, pitted against Mr Stalin. Babu was a former DMK MLA and a party hopper with some organisational muscle who defected from the DMK and joined the TVK. From Kolathur he was scheduled to campaign in neighbouring Villivakkam constituency, where TVK Election Campaign Management General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna filed his papers earlier in the day. However, Vijay's campaigning was suddenly cancelled and party functionaries announced that he would be campaigning in the constituency on a different date.
