New Delhi: Maharashtra's Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, announced that the state government has decided to make permits mandatory for passengers carrying electric rickshaws and e-bikes. This initiative will ensure uniformity in transport sector rules, according to Sarnaik. Earlier, the Maharashtra government decided not to issue new permits for the autorickshaws (with yellow-and-black registration plates) in the state. Additionally, the transport department temporarily suspended the permits of three operators to use e-bikes. After the announcement of the mandate permitting electric rickshaws, Sarnaik said that, given the rising number of electric vehicles in the state, the government decided to introduce new rules to ensure uniform regulations in passenger transport. However, before the introduction of permits, the electric rickshaws weren't required to have a separate permit for passenger transport. "With this step, uniform rules will apply to conventional autorickshaws, taxis, and electric rickshaws engaged in passenger transport. The objective is to bring transparency in the system and prevent irregularities," Sarnaik said. Sarnaik's office released a statement in which they stated that the mandate permits for all passenger transport vehicles will ensure great discipline in the transport sector. It will also provide safe and regulated services to commuters. Following the announcement, the government is preparing to introduce a single-window system to make it easier for individuals in the permit process, which includes the submission of applications, verification of documents, and approval from the government and other official bodies for permits.
