Pankaj Jain New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday took oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi at Lok Niwas. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of the Delhi Cabinet and Chief Secretary attended the oath-taking ceremony. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Delhi MLAs, residents from Amritsar, and family members of Sandhu were also present at the ceremony. Earlier in the day, Sandhu met union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence. After the meeting, Sandhu described the interaction as very pleasant and said they held detailed discussions on issues related to public service, administration and matters of mutual interest. A former Indian diplomat, he succeeds Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Sandhu is a 1988-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service and is widely known for his long diplomatic career representing India in key international assignments. Before this appointment, he served as India's 28th Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024. During his tenure in Washington, Sandhu played an important role in strengthening India-US relations and worked closely with the administration led by former US President Donald Trump, as well as the succeeding leadership. Sandhu began his diplomatic career with the opening of the Indian Embassy in Kyiv, where he served as head of the political and administrative wing. Over the years, he held several important assignments, including First Secretary at the Indian Mission in Washington, D.C., and Consul General in Frankfurt. He also served twice at the Indian Embassy in Washington and held senior positions in the Ministry of External Affairs. Sandhu was appointed India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020. Earlier, he had served at the High Commission of India in Colombo as head of the political wing between December 2000 and September 2004. After retiring from the diplomatic service in February 2024, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar, though he did not win the seat. With decades of diplomatic experience and international exposure, Sandhu is expected to bring administrative and policy expertise to his new role as the Lieutenant Governor of the national capital. Born on January 23, 1963, in a family of educationists, Sandhu studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar and graduated with History (Honours) from St. Stephen's College.
