Indian students in Iran seek exam postponement amid advisory to return home

Srinagar, Feb 24: Indian students studying in Iran on Tuesday urged the Government of India to coordinate with universities there to postpone examinations scheduled for March, saying the examinations are forcing them to remain in the country despite an advisory asking them to return home amid rising tensions. Thousands of Indian students, particularly from Jammu and Kashmir, are pursuing medical and theological studies at institutions across Iran. However, following the Feb 23 advisory, the Embassy of India in Tehran urged Indian nationals to leave the country amid an evolving security situation, leaving students anxious about their academic future. In a video message, Mohd Azim, a second-semester student at Iran University of Medical Sciences, said their examinations are scheduled for March and leaving now could mean losing the academic year. "We request the Government of India to engage with Iranian universities and ensure we do not lose our academic year. The exams should be postponed so that we can leave safely," he said. Another student, Bilal Bhat, said the examinations scheduled on March 5 and March 28 are crucial. "There are concerns and the situation is a little tense here as everyone is thinking about the possibility of war. We want to leave the country, but we also have exams. If we leave now, it may create difficulties for our future because the National Medical Commission (NMC) may invalidate our degree. If the exams are postponed, we will leave immediately," he said. Meanwhile, students said some Iranian universities have stated that they have not received any official communication from the Indian Embassy regarding evacuation or postponement of exams. "Urmia University informed students that it has not been officially notified about the advisory. Similarly, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Iran University of Medical Sciences have also not received any such communication," a student representative said. Meanwhile, representatives of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) Iran Students Wing met university authorities following the advisory issued by the Indian mission. Dr Mohd Momin Khan, AIMSA National Representative and Acting President J&K, said universities have offered students the option to appear for the Uloom Paya examination either on March 5, 2026, or in September 2026. "However, due to the ongoing war-like situation, students are under extreme stress and mental pressure and are confused about making the right decision," he said. Khan said opting for the September examination carries uncertainty and may extend the duration of their degree, while appearing in the March examination under unstable circumstances is also risky. He said AIMSA has taken up the matter with the Prime Minister's Office and is hopeful that the universities will postpone the examinations. "The safety and lives of students matter more than anything else. Students are unable to make a confident and informed decision and need urgent intervention from authorities," he said. Khan added that AIMSA has also written to the Prime Minister requesting coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs so that universities are formally informed about the postponement of exams and students can return home without anxiety. He also urged the Indian Embassy in Iran to liaise with university authorities and formally communicate the postponement of examinations to ease students' concerns.
