Kochi, Dec 17 (UNI) Group Legrand India, a leading provider of electrical and digital building infrastructure, in collaboration with INS Venduruthy under the Southern Naval Command, has inaugurated an innovative biodegradable waste management project at the Kochi Naval Base. The project, implemented as part of Legrand India's social initiative in consultation with Ram Biologicals, marks a significant step towards the naval base's goal of achieving Zero Waste on Ground and supporting India's circular economy objectives. As part of the initiative, a fully automatic organic waste processing unit with a capacity of around one tonne per day has been installed. The unit integrates shredding and drying processes to convert biodegradable waste into dry, odourless material suitable for composting within 12 hours, without the use of electrical heating coils, ensuring energy efficiency. The patented technology enables 100 per cent biodegradable waste management through advanced automation and converts organic waste into compost and fertiliser without emissions, offering a sustainable and decentralised waste management solution. Speaking on the occasion, Abida Aneez, Vice President- CSR and Sustainability, Group Legrand India, said sustainability remains central to the company's operations. She noted that the collaboration with the Indian Navy demonstrates Legrand's commitment to innovative solutions that minimise environmental impact and promote circular economy practices. The project builds on last year's collaboration between Legrand India and the Naval Base, which saw the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility for plastic waste recycling, helping recycle over 100 tonnes of plastic waste annually. With the addition of the biodegradable waste management system, the Kochi Naval Base moves closer to achieving zero solid waste output for its community of over 11,000 personnel.
