Mapusa (Goa), Dec 17 (UNI) A court in North Goa on Wednesday ordered a fresh medical examination of Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, co-owners of 'Birch by Romeo Lane' nightclub, after they were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class here following their deportation from Thailand. The Luthra brothers arrived in Goa from Delhi earlier in the day under heavy police escort and landed at Manohar International Airport, Mopa, at around 10.45 am. They were first taken for a medical check-up at the Primary Health Centre in Siolim, where one of the accused complained of chest pain and uneasiness. Subsequently, both were shifted to the District Hospital in Mapusa, where they underwent a detailed medical examination lasting over an hour. After the initial assessment, the accused were taken to the Anjuna Police Station and later produced before the magistrate. However, after perusing the medical reports and noting discrepancies, the court directed that both accused undergo a fresh medical examination, as one of them had complained of chest and back pain during the earlier check-up. Following the court's order, the brothers were taken back to the District Hospital. The remand hearing has been deferred until the completion of the re-examination. The Luthra brothers were arrested on Tuesday at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, soon after their arrival from Bangkok, following their deportation from Thailand. A Delhi court had granted a 48-hour transit remand to the Goa Police, rejecting the request for longer custodial custody. The brothers had allegedly fled to Phuket, Thailand, in the early hours of December 7, just hours after a devastating fire broke out at their nightclub in Arpora village on the night of December 6. The fire, which occurred around 11.45 pm, claimed 25 lives and left several others injured. More than 150 tourists and staff members were reportedly present inside the nightclub at the time of the incident. Following the tragedy, the Anjuna Police registered a case against the brothers under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal negligence and violations related to illegal construction. Goa Police have said the custodial interrogation of the accused is crucial to probe alleged management lapses and serious safety violations. An international search was launched soon after the incident, with a lookout circular issued and an Interpol Blue Corner Notice sought. The Ministry of External Affairs suspended the brothers' passports between December 9 and 11, following which Thai authorities detained them at a hotel in Patong, Phuket, on December 11. They were later shifted to an immigration detention centre in Bangkok and deported to India under bilateral legal arrangements. Investigations have revealed multiple alleged violations at the nightclub, including operation with expired licences, absence of mandatory fire safety clearances, and lack of proper emergency exits. Preliminary findings suggest that electric firecrackers used during an event struck the wooden ceiling, triggering the blaze. Police have also arrested five managers and staff members in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway, and the Goa Police are expected to seek custodial interrogation of the Luthra brothers after the court-ordered medical process is completed.
