Guwahati: Tension has escalated in the peripheral areas of Manipur's Bishnupur district following suspected militants firing. No one was injured. However, the incident has happened when groups of Internally Displaced People have returned home. A police official said that several rounds were fired near the Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas of Bishnupur district, which borders the Churachandpur district, late Tuesday night. The police officer said that additional security forces, led by senior officials, rushed to the area and launched a search operation to nab the suspected militants involved in the firing. The incident occurred a day after around 390 people, displaced by the ethnic clashes, returned to their homes in Phougakchao Ikhai and some other areas. IDPs in the last several days are protesting seeking resettlement amidst proper security cover. The police official said, "Such incident of firing has happened after almost three months." Over 260 people were killed, 1,500 were injured, and over 70,000 were displaced after the ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March', organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13 this year.

IMPHAL: Security forces have arrested three militants, belonging to two proscribed outfits in Manipur, police said on Saturday. All the arrests were made on Friday in Bishnupur, Kakching and Imphal West districts, a senior officer said.
