Guwahati, Dec 17: In a bid to curb student absenteeism and reduce the risk of dropouts, the Department of School Education has launched an automated SMS-based absenteeism alert system through the Shiksha Setu application. The technology-driven initiative aims to strengthen student attendance and ensure timely intervention by schools and parents, said State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, while addressing the media today. According to a study conducted by UNICEF, student absenteeism remains a concern due to factors such as family-related issues and lack of parental awareness. The new system seeks to address these challenges by enabling continuous monitoring and prompt communication. Under the initiative, automated SMS alerts will be triggered when a student remains absent for five consecutive days. The notifications will be sent at fixed intervals - on the 5th, 10th, 15th day and so on - and will continue until the student resumes attending school. The alerts will be sent simultaneously to class teachers and parents or guardians. Teachers will receive messages specifying the student's name, class and section, allowing them to directly follow up with families, while parents will receive concise reminders about their child's prolonged absence, encouraging them to send the child back to school. To ensure wider reach and effective communication, the SMS alerts will be delivered in five official languages - Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi and English. In each district, messages will be sent in at least two relevant local languages, depending on the region's linguistic and demographic profile. The Minister said the initiative marks a significant step towards improving educational continuity and fostering stronger school-parent engagement across the State.
