T'puram: The construction for the next phase of Vizhinjam international seaport is set to begin in Jan, said minister of ports V N Vasavan.Speaking to reporters after a review of the work at the port on Tuesday, Vasavan said preparations for the second, third and fourth phases of construction are complete. "In the second phase, the existing 800m berth will be extended by 1,200m, making it a 2,000m berth, allowing larger ships to dock simultaneously. Additionally, the current 2.96km breakwater will be extended by 920m, reaching over 3,900m." The inauguration of the construction of the next phase will take place in the second week of Jan, he added. The final date will be announced after consulting with chief minister and Adani Group, he said. According to the new contract, the second, third and fourth phases will be completed by 2028. This will transform Vizhinjam into a globally recognised port, the minister stated. Around 50 hectares of land will be acquired for yard facilities and inspection systems necessary for completing the phases, he said. The connectivity work for the temporarily constructed approach road will be completed soon, with its inauguration to follow, facilitating road cargo transport. The first phase of operations at Vizhinjam port exceeded expectations in terms of success, he said. As the port completes its first year of commercial activity, it managed to handle about 400,000 more containers than initially targeted. After commercial operations started, the initial annual target for the port was to handle 1 million containers. However, according to recent data, 636 ships arrived and around 1.4 million containers were handled. Massive ships like MSC Turkey, MSC Irina and MSC Verona, which had not previously docked on Asian coasts, arrived at Vizhinjam. For railway connectivity, land acquisition for a 10.7km railway line is under way. With the port recently gaining Integrated Check Post (ICP) status, new tourism facilities can be developed. Efforts in collaboration with tourism department will commence soon. Govt has received approximately Rs 970 million in tax revenue so far, the minister noted. Currently, around 1,000 people gained direct employment. Once all phases are completed, over 6,000 people will be directly employed and thousands more will gain indirect employment through logistics systems and related industries. It is a matter of pride that ships bypassing Dubai, Singapore or Colombo are docking here, the minister added.
