Srinagar, Dec 16: The Counter Intelligence wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday conducted pre-dawn raids at multiple locations across the Kashmir Valley, busting a terror-linked network of anti-national elements allegedly operating under the guise of social activism, officials said. The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) carried out coordinated searches across seven districts, during which 12 suspects were detained for questioning. Officials said the operation exposed a covert terror-support ecosystem that was masquerading as voices of social change. The searches were conducted in connection with a 2023 case registered at the CIK Police Station, Srinagar, under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The action followed due legal process, with search warrants issued by a special court designated under the NIA Act in Srinagar, officials added. According to the police, the case is based on credible intelligence inputs suggesting that certain individuals in Jammu and Kashmir were exploiting platforms linked to mass media, social media, human rights advocacy, environmental causes and women empowerment as a cover to carry out activities "gravely prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity and security of India." "Discreet verification further revealed their suspected links with secessionist groups and proscribed terrorist organisations," an official said. Investigations have also indicated that some of the suspects were allegedly in contact with Pakistan-based terror handlers through encrypted communication applications, officials said. "They are suspected of peddling false narratives, glorifying terrorists and terrorism, radicalising impressionable youth, and making systematic attempts to disrupt public order and peace in Jammu and Kashmir," the official added. Acting on these inputs, searches were conducted at 12 locations in Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kupwara, Budgam and Shopian districts. During the operation, police seized a substantial cache of incriminating digital material, including 10 mobile phones, a laptop and 14 SIM cards, all of which have been sent for detailed forensic examination. Officials said the operation has dealt a significant blow to a clandestine network that allegedly sought to misuse the credibility of social causes to further terror agendas. "The seized digital evidence is expected to help unravel deeper layers of the conspiracy, and further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses," an official said.
