Srinagar, Dec 16: Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra-starrer Sholay, widely regarded as one of Indian cinema's greatest films, returned to the big screen last week as cinephiles gathered at INOX multiplex in Srinagar to relive the 1975 cult classic. The special theatrical re-release marks 50 years of Sholay, which completed its golden jubilee in August this year. To commemorate the milestone, director-producer Ramesh Sippy, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), restored and re-released the film under the title 'Sholay: The Final Cut'. The restored version features previously deleted scenes and Sippy's original dream ending, in which Thakur Baldev Singh kills the dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh, a climax that was altered during the film's original release. The screening in Srinagar witnessed strong footfall, with fans of classic Hindi cinema, especially admirers of Dharmendra, flocking to the theatre to experience the iconic film on the big screen once again. "For me, Sholay is not just a film, it is an emotion. Watching Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan together on a big screen again gave me goosebumps," said Mohammad Yusuf, a 52-year-old film enthusiast, after the screening at INOX Srinagar. Another viewer, Aamir Khan, a college student, said the restored version helped him understand why the film continues to influence generations. "I had seen Sholay on television many times, but watching it in a theatre with powerful sound and restored visuals is a completely different experience. The background score and dialogues still feel fresh," he said. Several viewers said the film served as a tribute to Dharmendra's enduring legacy and his iconic portrayal of Veeru. "Dharmendra's screen presence, energy and dialogue delivery are unmatched. This re-release reminds us why he remains one of the greatest stars of Indian cinema," said theatre-goer Tahir Najar. Released in 1975, Sholay was directed by Ramesh Sippy and featured an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan. Over the decades, the film has achieved cult status, with its characters, dialogues and music becoming deeply ingrained in popular culture.
