Mysore/Mysuru: Following Supreme Court directives for better management of stray dogs, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), People For Animals (PFA) and Animal Husbandry Department had jointly organised a stray puppies adoption programme at Town Hall premises in city this morning. Today's adoption programme was held to give more publicity to the event so that others would be inspired and come forward to adopt stray pups and nurture them. Today's symbolic event saw adoption of four pups. While MCC Zone 6 Zonal Commissioner M.S. Pratibha adopted two pups, Adarsh and Sudeep of city adopted one pup each. Speaking on the occasion, MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif said that the city has more stray dogs and in a bid to control their population this adoption programme was being held and called upon dog-lovers to adopt stray pups as it will help control their menace on streets. Sponsor if you cannot adopt The MCC Commissioner also said that those who wish to adopt stray pups but cannot do it due to various reasons can sponsor sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination programmes. Individuals, institutions and organisations can also adopt stray pups or sponsor their sterilisation and vaccination or can even sponsor food to them, he added. Rayanakere Dog Shelter will be started soon Pointing out that an Operation Theatre (OT), which has the capacity to operate 10 dogs in a day has already been constructed at the dog shelter in Rayanakere, Shaikh Tanveer Asif said that medical equipment will be installed in the OT next month besides stating that facility to house 500 stray dogs at the Rayanakere Dog Shelter will be started soon in the first phase. Animal Husbandry Department Taluk Assistant Director Dr. Poornananda said that there are about 50,000 stray dogs for a population of about 10 lakh in Mysuru city and taluk. Continuing, he said, "We have been hearing news about stray dogs menace and stray dogs attacking public. Various Departments have been working towards controlling the population of stray dogs, but still there are more stray dogs on the streets." Desi breeds are more loyal and trustworthy Stating that desi breeds are more loyal and trustworthy than imported breeds, he said that it is scientifically proven that having a dog at home will bring down stress among individuals and dogs can significantly contribute to a family's happiness and well-being. The benefits are widely documented and include improvements in mental, physical and social health, he added. Dr. Poornananda said that desi breeds are easy to maintain and the expenditure to look after them is also very less compared to other breeds as stray dogs by birth are acclimatised to all types of weather and do not fall sick often. Hence more people should come forward to adopt stray puppies.
