SHILLONG, Dec 15: In a major step towards strengthening the operational capabilities of the Meghalaya Police, the state government has approved the establishment of a specialised Urban Warfare Training Facility (UWTF) along with a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) school, Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang said on Monday. Speaking to The Shillong Times, the DGP said that the proposal for the UWTF, submitted earlier, received approval from the state government last week. "We had sent the proposal earlier and it was approved by the government last week," Nongrang said. According to an official notification issued by the Home (Police) Department, the Urban Warfare Training Facility will be developed at Mawiong. The facility is intended to provide realistic, structured and scalable training environments to equip police personnel with the skills required to effectively respond to emerging urban security challenges, including complex law-and-order situations and modern policing demands in urban settings. In addition to the UWTF, the state government has also approved the setting up of a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) school at Baghmara in South Garo Hills. A senior police official informed that this specialised training institution will focus on enhancing the capabilities of state police personnel and commando units engaged in counter-insurgency and jungle warfare operations. The CIJW school will cater to special units operating in dense forests and difficult terrain, providing them with advanced training tailored to the unique geographical and security challenges of the region. The initiative is expected to significantly bolster Meghalaya's internal security preparedness and operational effectiveness. A senior police official said the twin training facilities reflect the government's commitment to modernising police training infrastructure and ensuring that personnel are well-equipped to handle both urban and rural security challenges in the state.
