Congress Gets Twice Strike Rate Of BRS In Panchayat Poll

Hyderabad: The Congress-backed candidates won 61.24 per cent sarpanch posts in the recently held first and second phase of gram panchayat polls, registering a strike rate twice that of the BRS's 27.19 per cent and over 10 times of the BJP's 5.45 per cent. Out of the 8,566 sarpanch posts for which elections were held, the Congress-backed candidates won 5,246 posts, those by the BRS 2,329, the BJP-backed candidates won 500 and independents and others secured 467 seats. During the first phase of polls in 4,235 villages, Congress-backed candidates won in 2,865 villages. In the second phase poll held in 4,331 villages, the Congress-supported candidates won in 2,381. The pro-Congress candidates won majority of seats in Nalgonda district (411), Medak (202), Nizamabad (274), Sangareddy (226), Rangareddy (207), Vikarabad (278), Suryapet (209), Mahbubabad (212), Khammam (262), Kamareddy (229). The BRS-backed candidates won 185 sarpanch posts in Siddipet, 147 in Nalgonda, 117 in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, 107 in Vikarabad, 96 in Mahabubnagar, 82 in Mahbubabad, 79 in Asifabad, 78 in Khammam, 74 in Kamareddy, 66 in Sircilla, and 63 in Karimnagar. BJP-backed candidates secured 74 sarpanch posts in Nirmal, 47 in Bhadradri Kothagudem, 52 in Adilabad, 28 in Kamareddy, 27 in Nizamabad, 24 in Rangareddy, 23 in Siddipet, and 17 in Medak. The State Election Commission, meanwhile, is making arrangements for the third phase gram panchayat polls to be held on December 17. During the third phase, 27,277 candidates are contesting for 4,158 Sarpanch posts. A total 89,603 candidates are contesting for 36,442 ward member posts. The political campaign concluded on Monday. The officials have started shifting the election material to villages. The police officials also deployed the forces at all districts where polling was to be held on December 17.
