President, Governors Cannot Be Given Time Limit In Approving Bills: Supreme Court

Delhi/Hyderabad, Nov 20 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed its opinion on 14 questions posed by the President regarding the imposition of a deadline on the President and Governors to give their approval to the bills passed by the state assemblies. It was stated that it is not appropriate to impose a deadline on the President and Governors in the matter of approval of pending bills. Here To Join Us On WhatsApp It is known that the bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai, Justice Suryakant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice AS Chandurkar had heard the President's report for 10 days from September 11 and adjourned its opinion. The verdict to this effect was issued today. It commented that imposing a deadline on the President and Governors would be a violation of the constitutional powers. However, it was of the opinion that keeping them pending for a long time was not right. It said that Governors cannot send back bills without giving a reason. It explained that Governors can only pass bills, send them to the President or send them to the Assembly. The Supreme Court made it clear that Governors cannot exercise unlimited powers. It is known that the Supreme Court recently issued a sensational verdict imposing a specific timeline on the President on the bills sent by the state governors. The top court made it clear that the President must take a decision on the bills sent by the governors within three months. If not, the Supreme Court ordered the state to inform the reason for the delay. Responding to this, President Droupadi Murmu asked, "Can the Supreme Court set a deadline for the President and the Governor?" Here To Join Us On WhatsApp He said how did the court give its verdict when there is no such provision in the Constitution. He asked several questions under Article 143(1) of the Constitution, such as 'How can the Supreme Court replace the powers of the President or Governor in the Constitution with its own powers under Article 142? Are the states abusing the plenary powers of the Supreme Court against the Centre?' He asked the court to express its views on these questions. (Maxim News)
