Trichy: The demand for electric vehicles (EV) is rising sharply in Trichy, but public charging infrastructure remains largely stagnant, leaving daily users struggling for reliable options. Regional Transport Office (RTO) data shows that the four Trichy RTO jurisdictions recorded 2,888 EV registrations (all categories) as of November. The numbers stood at 1,887 in 2023 and 2,858 in 2024 -- a nearly 53 per cent jump over two years. While EV adoption has grown, users say charging facilities have not kept pace. Except for a few hotels, showrooms and fuel stations that cater mainly to visitors, residents find it difficult to access public chargers for two-wheelers and cars. Many said the available points are often occupied, poorly maintained or too slow. "Scare of running out of charge is always there. Fast-charging public stations are missing. I charge my EV before leaving home," said Nitin Chopra of Thillai Nagar. The city has fewer than 15 public charging stations, many located in star hotels and usually taken up by guests. In other pockets, showrooms offer charging points, but these are often used by food delivery workers. Users say only those with predictable travel routes feel comfortable with EVs. "My father rode his EV scooter to Samayapuram temple and ran out of charge while returning. He had to plug in at a grocery store," said Gokul Ravi of Big Bazaar Street. This gap remains despite the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 identifying Trichy as one of six EV cities.
