Kodungallur: A hissing sound of gushing air is all you hear when you turn on most of the drinking water taps in Ala Gothuruth. The residents of Ala Gothuruth, who solely rely on the water authority for drinking water supply, are tired of requesting authorities to find a solution for their plight. People had resorted to protests a few months ago when drinking water scarcity became severe. Then, the water authority implemented a hotline project that ensured the drinking water supply twice a week. However, the water supply has been jeopardised as the taps are broken at many places. Ala Gothuruth is an island surrounded by salty water. Drinking water supply was restarted at least in small quantities after the High Court intervened in the matter. Panchayat member Raju Padikkal said that drinking water supply is not efficient in certain areas, including the Ala Vadakke Thuruth area near Ala church and Pananthara temple, as well as near the SNDP office and link road. Earlier, the lower regions of the island used to receive water. However, now, the water supply has become scarce even on the eastern side of the island. Meanwhile, the people of the locality have become so desperate and wonder whether this crisis will end at all. The pipes' bursting during the construction of the six-lane national highway has become a common issue here. Besides, repair and maintenance of these damaged pipes and taps often get delayed, making the situation worse for the people.
