Ahmedabad: Teachers serving as booth-level officers (BLOs) in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process submitted memorandums to district collectors on Saturday, highlighting the difficulties they face while performing election-related duties. The programme was organized under the leadership of the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh. In Ahmedabad, too, representatives of the association handed over a memorandum to the district collector.The primary demands include a permanent end to the issuance of arrest warrants against BLOs, the creation of a separate cadre for BLO duties, and equal distribution of responsibilities among all 13 cadres in accordance with the Election Commission guidelines. The teachers argued that issuing warrants for BLO-related lapses creates a sense of humiliation and is akin to "colonial-era practices".At the Ahmedabad Collector's office, the association submitted a representation addressed to the chief minister and the chief electoral officer. They pointed out that women teachers face additional hardships during fieldwork and urged that officials refrain from using threatening or intimidating behaviour toward BLOs. The memorandum also stressed the need for immediate guidelines to prevent such incidents.Teachers further requested that those unable to attend meetings or duties for genuine reasons be allowed to explain their absence. They also raised concerns about the additional burden of online data entry during SIR work, noting that no technical support is provided. The association recommended that orders requiring teachers to carry out online entry be withdrawn.Statewide, these memorandums aim to draw attention to the challenges faced by teachers assigned to BLO duties and to seek long-term changes in the system.
