Srinagar, Nov 10: The spotlight shifts to Budgam on Tuesday as the central Kashmir constituency goes to the polls in a by-election widely seen as a key test of the National Conference's political dominance and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's hold on the electorate less than a year after the Assembly elections. The bypoll was necessitated after Omar Abdullah, who won from both Budgam and Ganderbal in last year's elections, decided to retain his traditional seat of Ganderbal. Omar had secured a comfortable victory in Budgam, polling 35,804 votes against 17,445 garnered by the PDP's Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi. Although the campaign started on a quiet note, the last few days witnessed an intense political push with major J&K leaders including Omar Abdullah, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, and BJP's Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, hitting the ground to mobilise voters.
