Pune: A supervisor at the site of Maha Metro's work between Nigdi and Akurdi was arrested on Monday on the charge of stealing 40 tonnes of steel with the help of the driver of a transport operator. The duo, between September last year and January this year, stole steel worth Rs20 lakh from the site of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) and sold it to different scrap dealers in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. The police on Tuesday took one of the scrap dealers into custody. A Nigdi police team led by assistant inspector Ambarish Deshmukh made the arrests. A general manager of Maha Metro's contractor lodged a complaint with the police. Deshmukh said according to the complainant, the steel material was being stolen from the Maha Metro's site between Nigdi and Akurdi in small quantities for the past few months. "When the company officials checked the CCTV cameras' footage, they found that the supervisor, Harishchandra Kumar of Nigdi, and the dumper driver, Mohammed Patel of Moshi, were behind these thefts," he said. He said the police took the duo into custody. "During the questioning, they admitted that they were involved in stealing steel since September last year. They stole almost 40 tonnes of steel from the site. No one suspected anything as the stolen steel would be loaded in the truck in the presence of Kumar," Deshmukh said. The officer said the duo sold the steel to more than six scrap dealers. "On Tuesday, we took one of them into custody. The dealer admitted that he had purchased the steel from them about two months ago and had sold it," he said. Deshmukh said the duo used to sell the steel to scrap vendors for Rs25 to Rs30 per kg. The market rate of steel is about Rs55 per kg. "We are tracing the other scrap dealers," Deshmukh said.
