Chandrapur: Public anger flared across Chandrapur district on Tuesday as villagers staged two separate protests demanding the capture of tigers responsible for recent fatal attacks on farmers in Nagbhid and Chimur tehsils. Hundreds of villagers -- including farmers, labourers, and women -- rallied at Talodhi (Balapur) forest range office in Nagbhid, while residents of Shivara village in Chimur blocked the Kampa-Chimur highway, accusing the forest department of inaction.The protests at Talodhi followed the killing of farmer Vasudev Wete recently in Akapur by a tiger in his farm on Friday evening. The tiger has since been frequently sighted near the village, killing domestic and wild animals, triggering panic and halting paddy harvesting activities. Despite installing seven traps and a live camera, the forest department has yet to capture the animal. Protesters at Talodhi range forest office dispersed after receiving a Rs9.75 lakh compensation cheque for victim's family but warned of renewed agitation if the tiger is not caught within three days.In Chimur, a similar wave of anger erupted after 60-year-old former sarpanch Nilkanth Bhure was mauled to death on Sunday evening. His death prompted a road blockade by villagers in Kampa-Chimur highway demanding immediate intervention. The agitation was joined by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Dr Satish Warjukar, Chimur Congress president Dr Vijay Gawande, and other local leaders.Earlier, similar protests and road blockade was held at Gondpipri on Monday by villagers following two women being killed by a tiger in Dhaba range.The twin protests on Tuesday underscore mounting frustration over recurring tiger attacks in Chandrapur -- Maharashtra's tiger capital -- where villagers are demanding decisive measures to ensure their safety.
