Gandhinagar: Manoj Kumar Das, a 1990-batch IAS officer who is currently serving as additional chief secretary (ACS) to the chief minister, will take over as the state's next chief secretary on Oct 31. The state general administration department (GAD) issued a notification to this effect on Tuesday, putting an end to the speculation regarding a possible extension for outgoing chief secretary (CS) Pankaj Joshi. Das, 58, who holds a B Tech in Computer Science from IIT Kharagpur, specializes in revenue administration, urban management and civic issues, law and order and disaster management. In addition to his role as ACS to the CM, Das also serves as ACS for the home department. Das has also served as ACS in the industries and mines, ports and transport, revenue, home, and food, civil supplies and consumer affairs departments of the state govt."Manoj Kumar Das, IAS, additional chief secretary to the chief minister, is transferred and appointed as the chief secretary to the govt of Gujarat with effect from Oct 31," states the appointment order issued by the GAD on Tuesday.Das is third in seniority after CS Pankaj Joshi, with K Srinivas and Sunaina Tomar being senior to him. However, K Srinivas is presently on central deputation, and Sunaina Tomar will superannuate in Nov this year.A native of Darbhanga in Bihar, Das joined the civil services in Aug 1990 and has since served in various capacities in the state administration and the Union govt during his 25-year career as a bureaucrat. He served as district development officer (DDO) in Junagadh district and as collector of Surat, Banaskantha and Porbandar districts.Earlier in his career, Das also served as municipal commissioner in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. It was during his stint as AMC commissioner that he played a key role in developing the Sardar Patel Ring Road and the Raska project, a water supply initiative for Ahmedabad city. The civic bodies of Vadodara and Surat received several awards while he was serving as their municipal commissioner.He also served as the joint managing director of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC). Currently, he is a director on the boards of GSPC LNG Limited and Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Limited. Das has also served in various positions in the revenue, ports and transport, industries and mines, food and civil supplies, energy and urban development departments of the state govt.
