Bengaluru: India is home to 1.9 million developers building on GitHub, making it the second-largest developer community in the world after the United States. According to the Octoverse 2025 report, GitHub projects that by 2030, India will have over 57.5 million developers, surpassing all other countries. This year alone, more than 36 million new developers joined GitHub -- roughly one every second -- bringing the global total to over 180 million. India added over 5.2 million developers in 2025, accounting for more than 14% of GitHub's total new users and emerging as the single largest source of new developers worldwide. The surge highlights a broader geographic shift in software development, with significant growth also coming from Brazil and Indonesia.GitHub crossed 100 million developers in 2023, doubling from 50 million in less than three years. Over the past five years, its global developer map was redrawn faster than at any other time, shifting the centre of the software boom toward emerging markets. This year, India added more developers than any other country, outpacing even the United States in growth. The report projects that India will expand its lead to 57.5 million developers by 2030, representing one in three of all global sign-ups.
