Guwahati: The devotional fervour of Chhath Puja this year found an added emotional rhythm as songs of Zubeen Garg once again became the soothing backdrop to the rituals performed at ghats in the city.Devotees in the city joined the pan-India celebration as the Chhath Puja, a four-day festival devoted to the sun god, commenced from Monday. While maintaining the traditional sanctity of the festival, the city, however saw the devotees playing music of Zubeen Garg, blending the Assamese sentiment with pan-Indian devotion."Chhath Puja in Assam has steadily evolved into a vibrant celebration of unity and shared devotion. In Guwahati's ghats located along the Mahatma Gandhi road, we played Garg's songs through loudspeakers alongside traditional folk songs. It is an emotional moment, and a reaffirmation of the singer's bond with Assam," said Maithali Jha, a resident of Kahilipara."Most of the young members of our households listen to Garg's music, and deep down it has also signalled a growing cultural trend, where music and the regional pride found shared expression," she also added.For the city's youngsters, particularly who were born and raised in the city, the Chhath evokes an eclectic mix of emotion, while some of them approach it with curiosity, pride and eagerness, while others are still curious, as they want to reconnect and experience it in their homeland.During the first day of the celebration called 'Nahay Khay', the city's ghats and worship spaces were beautifully decorated to enhance the festival atmosphere and purity of the rituals. Devotees had thronged the ghats from early hours, where they took a dip in the river, and offered prayers, fruits, and flowers and delicacies prepared at home to the setting sun and worshiped Chhati Maiya, seeking blessings for their prosperity, good health and happiness, filling the atmosphere with chants, hymns and the sound of conch shells.Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya also extended his wishes on the occasion of the festival. Taking to his social media, he stated, "Today, I had the privilege of offering salutations to the setting Lord Sun during the Chhath Mahaparv organized on the sacred banks of the Brahmaputra. On this divine occasion, I pray for happiness, prosperity, health, and a bright future in the lives of all the people of Assam and the entire nation.
