Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on has censured Panjab University, Chandigarh, for allegedly stopping a seminar dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, organised by the Students' Union on the university campus. In a statement issued on Monday, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said preventing a seminar dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur was an anti-Sikh action and a direct attack on the freedom of expression. It is extremely painful and worrying that in Panjab University, established on the land of Punjab, an attempt is being made to suppress the voices of Sikh scholars and intellectuals, said Dhami. He said as the Sikh community was observing the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, every organisation was expressing devotion towards the Guru Sahib by organising events and seminars. Ideally, the university administration itself should have made necessary arrangements for such a seminar. However, instead, the Sikh organisations are being stopped from paying their respects to Guru Sahib, said the SGPC chief. He said objecting to Sikh scholars and cancelling the seminar displayed a completely irrational and biased attitude by the university administration. This move is mentally distressing to the Sikh community, Dhami added. He demanded clarification from the Panjab University vice-chancellor and dean student welfare on this matter. Dhami also urged the central and Punjab govts to take the issue seriously and initiate strict action against those responsible. He said the SGPC would conduct its own investigation into the matter and take appropriate action.MSID:: 124850405 413 |
