Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set to witness another round of intense standoff between BJP and DMK, as chief minister M K Stalin said on Sunday that he would challenge special intensive revision (SIR) through legal means and people's protest.As Election Commission of India is gearing up to begin SIR in the state in the coming days, Stalin said BJP and its ally AIADMK were 'plotting' to remove the names of voters from marginalized sections from the electoral rolls through the exercise. "BJP and its ally AIADMK believe that if the names of voters from the working class, minorities, Scheduled Castes, women and the poor are deleted through SIR, they can secure victory without facing the people. But this calculation will fail in TN," Stalin said in a letter to party cadres. He said DMK had urged ECI to abandon the SIR process and requested that if the voters' list needs to be revised, proper procedures should be followed after providing sufficient time. "DMK has insisted that ECI stop SIR process and to carry out rationalization of voters list through appropriate means. If ECI proceeds with the undemocratic exercise, DMK will challenge them legally and resist such moves with people," Stalin said, adding that DMK was dutybound to safeguard the fundamental democratic right of the people to vote.As ECI, through SIR, 'deprived nearly 65 lakh voters in poll-bound Bihar of their voting rights', he said, DMK and other parties in INDIA bloc have been warning that BJP govt is attempting to use ECI as its puppet to execute the 'same shortcut' in TN. He said DMK cadres should be vigilant and monitor the SIR process, which seeks to deprive people of their voting rights. "AIADMK mortgaged its rights to BJP. Hence, it is the duty of DMK and allies to safeguard citizens' rights at polling booths," he said, and asked cadres to work with the motto 'En Vaakku chavadi, vettri vaakku chavadi' (my polling booth, victorious polling booth). Criticizing AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, Stalin said EPS was prioritizing political gains during the monsoon. "While our govt is on the ground ensuring relief measures during heavy rains, EPS is eyeing political harvest," he said. He alleged that during cyclone Gaja in 2018, the then AIADMK govt 'responded sluggishly'. "Unlike EPS the Dravidian model govt is working proactively to prevent floods, protect crops, and ensure smooth procurement," Stalin said.
