Gurgaon: The special task force (STF) in Haryana arrested Lakhwinder Singh, alias Lakha, a notorious gangster who was deported from the US following months of coordinated efforts between Indian and international agencies.Lakha -- hailing from Titram village in Kaithal district -- is best known as a close confidant of Anmol Bishnoi, the brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. His reputation for orchestrating extortion rackets and his alleged role in violent crimes made him a feared figure across Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. According to police records, Lakha has six criminal cases registered against him in Haryana alone, including charges of extortion, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms. He is also wanted in similar cases in neighbouring states.One of the most serious cases implicating Lakha dates back to 2023 in Ambala, where he is accused of extortion, attempted murder, and the illegal use of firearms. Seven of his associates, police said, have already been arrested in this case."He will be produced before a court, where we will seek his police remand for further interrogation," an STF official told TOI.The STF's Ambala unit is spearheading the investigation.Before fleeing India, Lakha was active in local gang operations between 2020 and 2021. He first moved to Germany, working in a general store there, before relocating to the US in 2022. There, he became a key player in Anmol Bishnoi's extortion network, targeting businessmen in Haryana and Punjab.Officials confirmed that Lakha used a genuine Indian passport to leave the country, with no evidence of forged documents against him."He went abroad around 2021-22 and began coordinating with Anmol Bishnoi from the US. He used social media and internet-based calling apps to make extortion threats," said an STF official.In Dec 2023, the STF issued a lookout circular against him, followed by a Red Corner notice through the CBI and Interpol in Dec 2024. After nearly a year of close cooperation with international authorities, Lakha was detained in the US and deported to India on Saturday.The STF claimed that its crackdown on organised crime had led to the arrest of over 220 suspects linked to various gangs this year, contributing to a drop in extortion calls from 160 in 2024 to 109 in 2025."Lakha's deportation marks the first successful operation of its kind from the US. It demonstrates that fugitives cannot escape the law, no matter how far they run," a senior STF official said.Investigators will now focus on tracing Lakha's travel route, probing the possible involvement of travel agents in its bid to uncover further links in Punjab and Rajasthan.The STF also cautioned young people not to be misled by the "false glamour" projected by gangsters on social media."We are committed to dismantling organised crime networks and ensuring that every fugitive, wherever they hide, is brought to justice," an STF spokesperson said.
