Lucknow: Devotees observed fast on 'Kharna' (second day of Chhath festival) from sunrise to sunset and took dip in the water. On Kharna day, women observe 'Nirjala Upvaas' The fast was broken only after offering 'arghya' to sun in the evening. The devotees prepare 'Kharna Prasad' which includes 'gur ki kheer' and roti.A devotee, Tulsi Kumari, who hails from Bihar, believes Kharna is the day of cleaning mind and soul. "On Kharna, I prepare 'kheer and roti' and abstain myself from all worldly pleasures, I don't watch TV or use mobile phone to watch movies, songs or news and sit quietly in a room and recite mantras," she said.People were seen offering water to sun while taking dip in the river wearing red, orange, yellow and green sarees.Rinki Devi, stepping out of the river after taking dip and offering 'arghya' to sun, said, "Today, we are invoking Surya Dev to bless us as we are going to observe Chhath fast from tonight". Neha Kashyap, holding a puja thal, said, "We have come to perform 'aavahan' (invocation) of Surya Dev, after which, Chhath fast will begin for 36 hours."
