Lucknow: Quick thinking by bus driver Jagat Singh and his two aides, Shyam Sundar and Manish, saved the lives of 39 passengers when their Delhi-Gonda sleeper bus suddenly caught fire on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway early Sunday morning.Speaking to The Times of India, driver Jagat Singh recounted the harrowing moments before the bus was engulfed in flames. "Around 4:30 am, the rear tyre suddenly burst with a loud sound. I immediately pulled the bus to the side and got down to check. Within moments, thick smoke began rising from the rear," he said.Sensing danger, Jagat quickly tried to douse the flames using two onboard fire extinguishers. "We had two cylinders, I used both, but the fire didn't stop. I realised the situation was worsening, so I shouted to wake everyone up," he added. Most passengers were asleep at the time.Within seconds, Jagat, along with Shyam Sundar and Manish, began evacuating passengers one by one, ensuring no one was trapped inside. "I kept shouting, 'The bus is on fire, get down quickly!' We made everyone stand safely on the roadside. Not a single life was lost," he said.The driver said the bus was barely a kilometre from the Revri toll plaza. Believing that firefighting equipment would be available there, he decided to drive the burning bus for about 500 metres to seek help. However, when he reached the toll plaza, there was no fire safety system in place."I ran to the toll booth and requested them to call the fire brigade, but no one had a working number. Even when we tried calling 101 and 100, the lines didn't connect. The fire truck arrived nearly an hour and a half later -- by then, the bus was completely gutted," Jagat recalled."It was terrifying, but all I cared about was getting everyone out alive. It was God's grace that no one was injured," said Jagat, who has been driving buses for over six years.Passengers hailed the trio's bravery, crediting them with saving dozens of lives in seconds. "Had the driver not acted so quickly, it would have been a tragedy. We truly owe our lives to him and his team," said one survivor.
