Chandrapur: Barely a week after a farmer was killed by a tiger in Dhaba forest range, another fatal attack has deepened fears among villagers. A 45-year-old woman, identified as Alka Pendor of Ganesh Pipri village in Gondpipri taluka, was mauled to death by a tiger on Sunday evening while working in an agricultural field.According to forest department sources, the incident occurred when Pendor, a farm labourer, was tending crops in a field near the village. The tiger pounced on her, killing her on the spot. Forest officials rushed to the scene after receiving information and later shifted the body to Gondpipri Rural Hospital for post-mortem examination.This is the second fatal tiger attack in the Dhaba range within a week. On October 18, Bhauji Pal, a farmer from nearby Chakpipri village, was killed in his field, and his partially eaten body was recovered the next day. Following that incident, the forest department had identified the 'problem tiger' believed to be responsible and obtained permission from the principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) to capture it.Even as the capture operation is underway, Sunday's killing -- suspected to have been carried out by the same tiger -- has heightened panic among residents. Several villages in the Dhaba range have reported frequent tiger sightings and pugmarks in recent weeks, raising alarm as harvesting season draws thousands of farmers into the fields for cotton picking, paddy harvesting, and soyabean collection.The latest incident brings the toll from predator attacks in Chandrapur district to 36 this year -- including 32 killed by tigers, two by leopards, and one each by an elephant and a wild boar.
