Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation's solid waste management department has unveiled a plan to deploy battery-powered vehicles equipped with audio systems that will play popular songs to encourage citizens to segregate waste. This initiative will mark a shift from the existing practice of waste collectors using whistles to alert households.Initially, these vehicles will be deployed in neighbourhoods with low rates of waste segregation. Currently, KMC conservancy workers collect kitchen waste daily and non-biodegradable waste like plastic, glass and metal three times a week.A KMC solid waste management department official said three varieties of songs, including a parody, have been submitted for consideration. "We will select some wards in the first phase that are non-performers in waste segregation. We hope the message we want to spread about the necessity to segregate waste at home through popular songs will yield results," he said. The civic body will, however, retain the 'whistling system' for the time being.To promote waste segregation, KMC has distributed 16 lakh buckets to 8 lakh households since Dec 2022.Since Dec 20, providing each household with two buckets -- one for dry waste and another for wet. Despite this, the practice of waste segregation has not been widely adopted.The prevalence of single-use plastic polybags continues to pose challenges for waste management in Kolkata, say civic officials. The ambitious segregation-at-source project, launched in Dec 2022, is yet to gain the desired momentum across the city's 144 wards. Much of the collected waste remains mixed, comprising biodegradable kitchen waste, plastic, non-biodegradable or recyclable and construction waste. While construction waste is transported to a stone and concrete crushing unit in Rajarhat, the significant presence of plastic polybags in kitchen waste remains problematic.While segregation efforts in several south Kolkata neighbourhoods are gradually improving, many areas in north and central Kolkata are lagging behind. "Some wards in the Jadavpur-Tollygunge belt that picked up pace in waste segregation have gradually slowed down. Areas like Golf Green, Bijoygarh, Netajinagar, Bansdroni, Ranikuthi, Jadavpur, and Baghajatin, which had earlier reported collection of segregated waste from 40% households, have recently shown a decline. Neighbourhoods like Patuli, Garia and New Alipore are at 30% compliance. But north and central Kolkata areas like Bowbazar, Sealdah, Manicktala, Girish Park, Beadon Street, and Jorasanko are at less than 20% compliance," an official said.
