Kolkata: With the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls about to kick off in Bengal, the Election Commission plans to appoint volunteers to assist booth-level officers (BLOs) during the three-month exercise.Poll announcement in Bengal is likely by early March and elections are expected to be held by April 2026.The poll panel is trying to get data of all govt employees in each block so that they can be used in the SIR process, an EC official said. The volunteers must be govt employees as they would help in filling up enumeration forms and, if need be, also replace BLOs during the SIR process.These volunteers would mainly be used for booths that have over 1,200 voters. The EC had decided to keep all booths restricted to 1,200 voters and for this Bengal will have an additional 14,000 booths from the existing 80,000 booths.Block development officers (BDOs) in some blocks have written to school inspectors to provide lists of permanent teachers or clerks or other govt employees to assist BLOs during the SIR. They have been told to submit the list of teachers and other teaching staff by Oct 29. The letter has a format to give details of teachers along with their mobile numbers.The allowance for the volunteers was, however, yet to be finalised, the EC official said. Meanwhile, a section of BLOs have submitted a memorandum to Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal seeking security.Officials said all BLOs would not be provided with securitymen, but if the situation demands, the DM or SDO might provide security on a case-to-case basis.Mackintosh refuses to work on booth infra upgradeMackintosh Burn, a state govt PSU that was approached by the EC to upgrade infrastructure in all booths in Bengal, has refused to do the work. With the poll panel earlier threatening to take legal action, the PSU on Saturday -- in a letter to the commission -- pleaded that since they have not signed any agreement with the EC, they be allowed to withdraw without any penal action.
