Hyderabad: With the state's peak power demand projected to touch 19,000 MW by next year, the state energy department has begun preparations to ensure uninterrupted supply during the 2026 rabi and summer seasons.Officials said the upcoming Yadadri thermal power station will be fully operational in the next few months, while Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) will also ramp up coal production to support enhanced power generation.At a review meeting held on Saturday, principal secretary (energy) Naveen Mittal said that even as demand touched 17,162 MW this year, the state's utilities successfully maintained stable supply due to advance planning and system strengthening. He directed Transco, Genco, and both southern and northern discoms to complete all ongoing network upgradation works by Dec, including line repairs, transformer installations, and capacity enhancement. Officials informed that 72 new sub-stations will be set up under the southern discom and 31 under the northern discom. Transco is currently upgrading transformer capacity at 181 extra high tension (EHT) sub-stations across the state. Additionally, the southern discom will install 8,384 new distribution transformers, while the northern discom will add 5,280, along with expansion of EHT, 33/11 kV lines and power transformer capacity at 33/132/220/400 kV sub-stations. Genco officials said overhaul work on most thermal units has been completed, with only BTPS and KTPS IV units under final stages. All units of the 4,000 MW Yadadri power project are set to come online in phases soon, significantly boosting the state's generation capacity. Adequate coal supplies have already been tied up for these units. Singareni CMD Balaram said coal production has reached 1.80 lakh tonnes per day and will be enhanced to 2.20 lakh tonnes per day by Nov, ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply for state thermal power plants through summer. Mittal also stressed the need to improve reliability and service transparency by implementing automation at the LT/11 kV level for feeder and transformer management. He instructed officials to extend SCADA-like monitoring systems beyond Hyderabad to rural and semi-urban networks. The feeder outage management system currently in use under southern discom has shown strong results and would be scaled up statewide. On electric mobility, he directed utilities and TGREDCO to accelerate EV charging infrastructure and support govt organisations in availing incentives under the PM-eDrive initiative. Southern discom CMD Musharaf Faruqui said 3,121 potential EV charging locations have already been identified, and the survey is still ongoing.
