Ahmedabad: The music thumped, the lights flashed, and revellers danced into the night, until sirens broke the beat. A DJ party at a Shilaj farmhouse turned into a police raid, as undercover officers from Bopal police found liquor and hookahs -- both prohibited under Gujarat's laws -- being served at the party on Friday night. By morning, 20 people, including 13 foreign students, two bootleggers and the owners of the farmhouse, were taken into custody.According to Bopal inspector B T Gohil, around 50 people were rounded up and brought to the police station. "Of them, 13 African students and two others were found to have consumed liquor. No drug has been found at the farmhouse so far. The hookahs have been sent to FSL to check for the presence of drugs," said Om Prakash Jat, superintendent of police (Ahmedabad rural). Police also recovered 51 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and 15 hookahs from the site, said SP Jat.Bopal inspector B T Gohil added, "Five people, including the property owners and two bootleggers who supplied the alcohol, were arrested in the early hours of Saturday. This took the total number of those apprehended, including some students of Gujarat University, to 20." The farmhouse, listed on multiple short-term rental platforms, was being used to host private parties without official permission, said police.The investigation revealed that the event had been organised as a "get-together" for African students studying in different colleges and universities across Gujarat. "Most of the participants hailed from Kenya, while others were from Comoros, Madagascar, and Mozambique," said police."The gathering was advertised as a social mixer for African students organised by a Kenyan student who is a student of a private university in Vadodara. However, our intelligence input suggested liquor was being served," SP Jat said. Acting on the tip-off, officers in civilian clothes purchased entry passes -- priced between Rs 700 and Rs 25,000 -- and infiltrated the party. Once confirmed, police teams swooped in and detained the attendees.The cops have registered a case against the organisers for hosting a party without police permission. They also charged the men under various sections of the Prohibition Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA), 2003, which prohibits the use of hookah in public spaces. The organisers have also been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for hatching a criminal conspiracy.Meanwhile, Gujarat University vice-chancellor Neerja Gupta confirmed, "Six students from our varsity are among those identified. All are from East Africa." Gujarat University is one of the Indian varsities empanelled to host recipients of scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). "The students were admitted to GU through ICCR. We have sought a report from them. Once we get the report, appropriate action will be taken," Gupta added.Gujarat ICCR sub-zonal officer Subhash Singh told TOI, "Nearly half a dozen students are studying in Gujarat, and we are verifying the academic affiliations of the rest.
