Coimbatore's Gandhipuram bus stand awaits nod for renovation | Coimbatore News - The Times of India

Coimbatore: The project to renovate Gandhipuram central bus stand at a cost of Rs30 crore is yet to take off with the state authorities yet to approve the revised detailed project report that the city corporation forwarded to them earlier this year.Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said they had shot off two reminder letters to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, seeking to speed up the approval process. "The proposal has to go through the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department to the funding body. The latest reminder letter was sent to the department 15 days ago. We are constantly following up on the proposal over the phone as well. The approval is expected to come through shortly," the corporation commissioner said. Once the approval is granted, he said, the entire operations from the central bus stand could be temporarily shifted to the Thiruvalluvar bus stand, which is the best alternative nearby. "If not, we have to explore another alternative." The detailed project report was prepared by an expert team from IIT Madras that the city corporation roped in to assist with various projects, including revamping of major bus stands in the city. The detailed project report for the renovation of Gandhipuram central bus stand was submitted to the state govt along with that for the Ukkadam bus stand. The proposal for the renovation of Ukkadam bus stand was approved and work has been started. The Gandhipuram central bus stand records an average footfall of 30,000 passengers daily, and 750 buses are being operated every day to Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Sathyamangalam, Avinashi, Mettupalayam and Anaikatti. Bus bays to accommodate 1,400 buses, air-conditioned waiting rooms, shops, a cloak room, parking lot for private vehicles, toilets and a feeding room are all part of the renovation project.
