Bambolim: Dempo Sports Club made a strong impression on their Super Cup debut with a fighting 2-2 draw against East Bengal in the opener at the Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, on Saturday.Dempo were gifted the opener before the half an hour mark as Mohamed Ali provided them the lead on their debut. Oscar Bruzon's side responded in the second half with goals from Mahesh Naorem (46') and Miguel Ferreira (57'). It looked all good for the Kolkata giants until substitute Laxminrao Rane made it 2-2 in the 89th minute with a stunning grounder.There was a gulf of difference between the two sides. Dempo, late entrants in the tournament after the withdrawal of RKFC, fielded an all-Indian squad. East Bengal started their season early and were Durand Cup semi-finalists. They also lost the IFA Shield final against archrivals Mohun Bagan SG on penalties.East Bengal started with five foreigners and should have taken the lead in the second minute itself, when Mahesh squared the ball to Hiroshi Ibusuki. The Japanese forward had only Dempo custodian Ashish Sibi at his mercy, but his effort hit the horizontal bar.Hiroshi had an opportunity to redeem himself, but his close-range attempt was blocked by Ashish.Dempo struggled to keep the ball but defended well for this period. The five-time national champions then took an unlikely lead in the 27th minute through a set piece.Amay Morajkar won a freekick after a challenge from Anwar Ali and sent in a dangerous freekick which was enough to create confusion inside the box. The visitors charged forward like a pack of wolves with Hiroshi first testing Ashish with a powerful shot. The Dempo custodian did well to push the ball away, but it fell straight into the path of Mahesh, who hammered it home.Thereafter, East Bengal were all over the Dempo territory.In the 57th minute, the visitors took the lead as Miguel unleashed a venomous strike into the top corner.
