Odisha targets 29.30 lakh hectares under crops for Rabi 2025-26

Bhubaneswar, Oct 25 (UNI) Odisha has set an ambitious target to bring about 29.30 lakh hectares under various crops during the Rabi 2025-26 season. The target includes 15.13 lakh hectares under pulses, 3.70 lakh hectares under oilseeds, 4.97 lakh hectares under vegetables, 1.15 lakh hectares under condiments, and 0.21 lakh hectares under sugarcane. The state aims to produce 23.26 lakh MT of food grains, 8.20 lakh MT of pulses, and 4.21 lakh MT of oilseeds. Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo approved the targets during the State-Level Conference on Rabi Campaign 2025-26 held here yesterday. He emphasised the need for proactive coordination across departments to ensure timely input supply, effective convergence, and continuous field-level monitoring. Singh Deo also suggested converting unused agricultural farms into storage facilities and called for strong leadership and dedicated supervision to ensure the benefits of the initiatives reach farmers. Development Commissioner Anu Garg highlighted that Odisha has achieved surplus water levels in its reservoirs and aims to provide irrigation to 90% of cultivable land, urging efficient water use in agriculture. Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee said the Rabi Programme 2025-26 focuses on increasing the area and productivity of pulses and oilseeds to achieve self-sufficiency (Atmanirbharata). He informed that an MoU between DAFP and ICARDA has been signed for new variety development. Padhee added that coordinated efforts are essential for the successful implementation of key schemes, including PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY), National Pulse Mission, NMEO-Oilseed, NFSM, National Horticulture Mission, Jackfruit Mission, National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), RKVY, PMKSY, and PMFBY. He further stated that the horticulture sector continues to expand, with more farmers adopting modern technologies and high-value crops. Flagship programmes such as MIDH, PMKSY, NMEO-Oil Palm, and state schemes for the development of potato, vegetables, spices, and fruit-specific missions require close monitoring for effective outcomes. Simultaneously, soil conservation and watershed development programmes like Coffee Mission, MGNREGS, Rainfed Area Development, and OMBADC are vital for promoting sustainable agriculture and building resilience in rain-fed regions. All district collectors have been issued the Rabi Circular by the Chief Secretary, directing them to adopt suitable strategies based on local agro-ecological conditions for the Rabi season.
