Kolkata: Airport and airline officials at Kolkata airport are planning to roll out safety measures in response to a series of onboard fires linked to portable power banks worldwide. They are planning to urge passengers not to charge phones using power banks on flights and restrict the storage of such devices to the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of the passenger. Such devices may not be allowed to be kept in overhead bins.Airport officials said additional screening protocols and public announcements will soon remind passengers of the official norm that power banks are strictly prohibited in checked-in luggage and must be carried in hand baggage while maintaining additional safety protocols.On Oct 19, a passenger's power bank caught fire on a Dimapur (Nagaland)-bound flight while the aircraft was taxiing at the Delhi airport. Earlier last week, a lithium-ion battery caught fire in the overhead compartment of an Air China flight from Hangzhou in China to Seoul, South Korea, forcing it to be diverted to Shanghai. In Jan, a power bank was believed to be the cause of a fire that engulfed an Air Busan plane with 176 on board on the tarmac. Also this year, a fire broke out in the overhead compartment of a Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hangzhou to Hong Kong just 15 minutes after takeoff after a power bank caught fire.Emirates has already implemented a prohibition on using power banks in flight from this month and restricted carriage to only one unit under 100 watt-hours with visible capacity labelling. Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific have also banned use of power banks on board despite allowing them to be carried in carry on luggage.A CISF officer at the airport said flyers were allowed to carry power banks in their hand baggage globally and felt DGCA was unlikely to announce restrictions on something that passengers needed to power their electronic devices, particularly phones. Airline officials said the ban on the carriage of batteries in registered baggage was put in place due to fears of fire being caused by overheating as the cargo hold is not air-conditioned."What DGCA can possibly do is issue an advisory restricting the use of power banks on board flights," an airline official said. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is reviewing technical inputs and considering tighter controls after recent in-country incidents and global developments.
