Bengaluru: Three residents of Bengaluru, including a woman and her son, were among the victims of the Kurnool bus fire that killed 20 passengers early Friday. Two of the deceased have been identified as Philomena Baby (64) and her son Kishore Kumar (41), residents of A Narayanpura near K R Pura. They were travelling in lower berths of the private sleeper bus when it caught fire and were charred to death.Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy said another passenger, Argha Bandopadhya, who died in the accident, had an Aadhaar card with a Bengaluru residential address.The Karnataka transport department sent a team to Kurnool to coordinate with the local administration, gather details of Karnataka residents who died in the accident, and provide assistance to survivors.The minister added that two other residents of Bengaluru who were travelling by the bus managed to survive.The minister added, "It is very unfortunate that many passengers have lost their lives. All sleeper buses have three emergency exits, and it is tragic that many passengers could not escape after the bus caught fire. Based on the information I received, the bus caught fire after it hit a motorcycle and dragged it for some distance, causing the tyres to catch fire due to a petrol leak from the bike. Many passengers who escaped used the rear exit, while most of those who died were in the front portion of the vehicle and could not reach the front exit. The reasons why they couldn't use the exit or any lapses on the part of the bus crew will be known after the investigation."According to the trip sheet, the woman and her son had booked their tickets online through a private travel portal and boarded the bus at Patancheru for their return journey to Bengaluru after visiting their relatives in Hyderabad. A friend of Kishore Kumar told TOI, "Kishore Kumar earlier worked in a PSU and later quit his job. He was a martial arts trainer. He and his mother went to Hyderabad to visit his brother and sister. While returning to Bengaluru, this tragic incident occurred. We were informed by the local administration that their bodies were completely charred, and they will be handed over to the family after DNA tests."Meanwhile, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar has urged the Andhra Pradesh govt to conduct a high-level inquiry into the incident. "The Kurnool bus fire is deeply tragic and unfortunate. There was a similar incident recently involving a Green Line bus in which 20 medical students escaped unhurt after our Raichur Congress president alerted the driver. However, the Andhra Pradesh police did not take any action then. We have asked the home minister and transport minister to take necessary precautions in Karnataka as well," he said."There is an apparent negligence in this case, hence a thorough investigation is needed. This is not a small incident, and we must ensure that such tragedies do not occur in the future," he added.
