With Rain Over, Froth Back In Yamuna, Pollution Rises | Delhi News - The Times of India

New Delhi: Even as Delhi govt prepares to set up 23 major Chhath ghats along the Yamuna, the Delhi stretch of the river, which was visibly cleaner after the monsoon rain, is showing renewed signs of degradation. Frothing has reappeared in parts of it -- a sign that pollution levels are rising again. Delhi Pollution Control Committee's monthly analysis for Oct shows a sharp rise in pollution levels compared to Sept, a month when the Yamuna was the cleanest in the recorded history due to the strong flow flushing the effluents out.According to the Oct report, the peak faecal coliform levels were recorded at the ISBT bridge -- the spot right after the confluence of the Najafgarh drain into the Yamuna -- at 21,000 most probable number (MPN)/100ml against 3,500 in Sept. The worst biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) level was also recorded at the same spot at 37mg/l against 13mg/l in Sept and the dissolved oxygen level went nil as the river exits the city against the presence of DO throughout the stretch. The samples were collected on Oct 9. Faecal coliform, which depicts the presence of sewage, must not exceed 2,500 units. Dissolved oxygen, which depicts life in the river, must not fall below 5mg/l and biochemical oxygen demand, which depicts its healing capacity, must not go beyond 3mg/l.Additional water is being released into the river to visibly clean it for the upcoming Chhath. Despite a substantial release of approximately 7,900 cusecs/day from Haryana's Hathnikund barrage on average since Oct 21 -- diverted from irrigation canals -- stretches such as Kalindi Kunj continue to show thick layers of froth.According to environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who held a meeting on the Yamuna on Friday, efforts are being made to make a long-term impact to revive the Yamuna. "Some ghats are being cleaned keeping the upcoming festival in mind, but we are working on the long-term revival of the river. DPCC is ensuring that no sewage can evade the sewage treatment plants and it is properly treated. We are also monitoring that drains don't remain untapped," Sirsa told TOI.Experts warn that measures like chemical defrothing and releasing large volumes of water from Wazirabad -- 20,000-30,000 cusecs one-two days before Chhath -- may help dilute pollutants temporarily, but they offer only short-term relief. Experts stress the need for long-term solutions, including tapping untreated drains, reducing sewage discharge and ensuring a minimum environmental flow in the Yamuna throughout the year, to prevent the cycle of frothing and pollution resurgence."Earlier on Oct 6, the froth in the river was dense, which is also being managed. The Yamuna this year has less froth than last year, but that's because a high volume of water has been released into it. Recently, during the monsoon, the river had most of its pollutants washed out and yet froth is visible," pointed out river activist Pankaj Kumar. He pointed out that the dark and murky water of the Najafgarh drain still dominated the Yamuna course upon viewing from Signature Bridge. "Until we don't control this, we won't see a cleaner Yamuna. Ten days after Chhath, water being diverted from the irrigation canal will go back and pollution will spike," said Kumar.According to Bhim Singh Rawat, a Yamuna activist and member of South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People, "It will help the river by recharging the saturated aquifers, providing a fresh lease of life to stressed aquatic life and checking the excessive mechanised sand mining." These steps will help the stretch in Delhi regain flowing condition, diluting the pollution to a great extent, he added. "Still, the river water would not be fit for bathing or swimming, let alone sipping. To improve it further, govt should regulate the major drains and increase discharges from the Wazirabad barrage," Rawat emphasised.
