New Delhi: Public Works Department (PWD) has begun preparing a detailed project report for the construction of a flyover along SSN Marg, stretching from the Anuvrat Marg red light to the DLF Farms cut, to reduce congestion.The three-kilometre stretch of SSN Marg is used by commuters heading to Gurgaon, the airport, Vasant Kunj and other parts of south Delhi.A PWD official said: "The road experiences heavy congestion because of the slow-moving traffic and frequent cross movements throughout the day, not just peak hours. A tender has been issued to select a firm to conduct a feasibility study." PWD has proposed an integrated transit corridor for the stretch. This will include the flyover, slip roads and either an underpass or a foot overbridge. PWD minister Parvesh Verma earlier visited the Chhatarpur assembly constituency at the request of local MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar. Following the visit, PWD officials were instructed to devise the plan.An official said: "Issues like road width being squeezed due to encroachments, and the presence of several commercial establishments will be addressed once the feasibility study is completed." The feasibility study will also include a survey of the area, the mapping of buildings and encroachments, a tree count and a documentation of signages, road features and other permanent structures. "The study will also assess the economic, environmental and social implications of the project through a cost-benefit analysis. Since a metro line runs parallel to the stretch, PWD will explore how the proposed corridor can be integrated with it to prevent any structural conflict," the project document states.Officials added that the consultant will specify which trees can be transplanted and which cannot be removed. The feasibility report is expected to be submitted to govt within six months, after which the construction project will be awarded. PWD officials said the corridor study is part of a broader plan to streamline traffic flows across Delhi's key arterial roads through grade separations, signal-free junctions, and improved multimodal integration with metro and bus networks. "The SSN Marg flyover will be one of the important projects in our corridor improvement programme," a PWD official said.The project, however, faces several challenges, particularly encroachments along the stretch. While the proposed right of way for the road is 100 feet, the existing width is about half of that because of encroachments by farmhouses and commercial development, officials said.
