Kolkata: When a family from Burdwan checked into room 302 of Hotel Al Burj on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road on Thursday, they were immediately struck by a pungent smell. A cursory search of the room did not reveal anything and hotel staffers sprayed room freshener liberally before the family settled in. They, however, had a fitful night as the stench got sharper. By Friday morning, it was unbearable and the family sought urgent intervention by the staff. What followed left the family shaken and traumatised.As hotel employees combed the room to locate the smell, out popped a decomposed body from inside the storage bed on which the family had spent the night. The body was identified as that of Rahul Lal (26), who had checked into the room with two other men on Wednesday at around 5pm claiming they needed to "rest for a few hours"."Soon after checking in, one of the three left the hotel. He returned around 11.20 pm and went to the room but after a few minutes left the hotel with the second person," said DCP (South) Priyobrata Roy. Lal, a resident of Collin Lane just a few hundred metres away, was missing from home since Wednesday, cops said. Police records revealed he had a history of committing petty crimes like theft and earlier lived in Picnic Garden. The body was identified by his maternal uncle, Justin John Chettri. Cops are trying to trace the two suspects. The identity of one, as provided in the hotel register, has turned out to be fake, police sources said. The murder motive is not clear yet, cops said. "The preliminary post-mortem report suggests death was homicidal and the cause was strangulation. An external injury mark on his head was apparent," said a police officer.Police sources said they are checking CCTV footage to ascertain if anyone else besides the three men had entered the room on Wednesday. All hospital staffers and boarders who checked in on Thursday have been asked to join the investigations. The hotel employees, who allowed the two guests to walk away, told TOI they had checked and cleaned the room but found nothing "amiss". It was only on Friday morning, when the current boarders insisted on a thorough search of the room that the body was discover, an officer said."There was blood at the back of the head and blood and human juices were oozing out of the ears and nose," said a police source.
