Mumbai: Veteran space scientist Eknath Vasant or EV Chitnis, who turned 100 on July 25 this year and played a key role in taking India to the stars in his lifetime, breathed his last in Pune on Oct 22. In the last six months, two Indian space legends have passed away. On April 25 this year, Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, called 'the father of India's moon mission', died following a prolonged illness. Describing Chitnis, scientists of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) called the Padma Bhushan recipient a visionary, institution builder and one of the true architects of India's space programme. Chitnis was a founding member of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (Incospar), which subsequently led to the formation of Isro, and was a key player in selecting Thumba, not far from Thiruvananthapuram airport, as India's first rocket launching site. Chitnis also played a part in the launch of India's first sounding rocket, Nike-Apache on Nov 21, 1963, at Thumba. As director of the Ahmedabad-based Isro's Space Application Centre, Chitnis led pioneering efforts in satellite technology, remote sensing and space-based applications. A key space milestone associated with Chitnis was the setting up of the first earth station for satellite telecommunications in India in Ahmedabad and executing the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), benefiting nearly 2,400 villages in six states. On July 25 this year, his family, friends and admirers had thrown a party for him on the occasion of his birthday with three cakes at his residence in Anand Park, Aundh. Several Isro officials, including chairman V Narayanan, were present. A day later, on July 26, the 'Professor EV Chitnis Centenary Conference' was jointly organised by the Mumbai-based National Centre for Science Communicators and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune. The participants at the daylong meet, which included Chitnis's son, Chetan, paid tribute to the veteran scientist. Chetan informed that when his father hit a century in age, he said: "If I had to live my life again, I wouldn't change a thing."
