Coimbatore: Pothole-ridden roads aren't anything new to the city. But with rainwater stagnating on them now, motorists are at a high risk of meeting with accidents every day.Take for instance the Vilankurichi Road, a crucial artery connecting the busy Avinashi Road and Sathyamangalam Road. The road in tatters has become a nightmare for motorists. According to a motorist, the road from the 'S' bend to Cheran Maa Nagar is filled with potholes. Two-wheeler riders losing balance and falling are a common sight on this treacherous stretch. A local resident attributed the bad condition of the road to the recent underground drainage work. "While pipelines were successfully laid, the road was not properly restored. Pits were merely filled with sand, which was washed away in the recent monsoon showers. Water stagnation has further damaged the road." M Ashok Kumar, a small-scale businessman from PN Pudur, said the bikers were finding it difficult to navigate through the stretch. "Regular commuters on the stretch are sure to develop back pain and other physical discomfort. Motorcycles will also develop technical glitches over time." The condition of the service roads flanking the GN Mills flyover on Mettupalayam Road isn't any different either. Recent rain has left these roads filled with potholes, posing a challenge to the motorists, especially for those from the rural parts of Coimbatore who commute to the city daily. Pointing to the rapid growth of residential areas and the presence of educational institutions at GN Mills, M Devendran, secretary, Coimbatore District Road Protection Committee, emphasized the urgent need for repairing the road. "Despite a recent inspection by the district collector, who directed immediate action, National Highways officials are yet to address the issues. The quality of roadwork is questionable. Even the roads that are relaid easily get damaged often. Authorities concerned should step in to ensure quality of work," he said. In ward 14, roads are filled with mud and it is nearly impossible for people to step out of their houses. Similar issues plague the Thudiyalur-Kanuvai road and the roads at Ramanna Nagar near Edaiyarpalayam and the Athipalayam Road-Ganapathy stretch, said another source. When contacted, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said they were planning to relay 3,141 roads and lay 250 new mud roads at a cost of Rs219 crore to address the woes.It is to be noted that the state had in the past sanctioned Rs202 crore to relay 3,456 roads in the corporation limits. According to the corporation commissioner, the fund allocation was insufficient and the work on relaying 417 roads was yet to commence. He said the new proposal to relay 3,141 roads had been sent to the state govt. However, only time would tell whether the govt would approve the new proposal to relay 3,141 more city roads. District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar said around 10 major roads have been identified for immediate action. "In Sept, a field inspection was conducted to assess the road conditions. A stage-by-stage action plan has been prepared. We are working on improving the condition of GN Mills-Urumandampalayam road and Thudiyalur-Kanuvai road with dense bituminous macadam layers." He said all work to dig up roads has been halted across the district and no further permissions for the same have been granted.

MahaRERA has so far issued 1,163 warrants worth ₹705.62 crore involving 442 real estate projects in Maharashtra. Of this, the MahaRERA has recovered around 29% or around ₹200 crore.
