Kolkata: The travel and tourism fraternity in Kolkata has unequivocally condemned a flyer's threat to a co-passenger for not speaking Marathi. The passenger at the receiving end of the diatribe, a popular YouTuber, was travelling from Kolkata to Mumbai when the woman seating near him demanded that he speak in Marathi as he was travelling to Mumbai."This language barbarism can never be tolerated. We should keep political agendas away from travel. We live in a democracy and have the right to travel anywhere in the country without being harassed," said Manav Soni of the Travel Agents Association of India.Anil Punjabi of the Travel Agents Federation of India reminded everyone that it was India's diversity that made it unique and drew admiration from across the world. "We need to be civil in our interactions and respect each other, irrespective of our mother tongue and religion,"he said.The incident allegedly occurred on Thursday on board Air India flight AI 676, which departed Kolkata at 6.25 am. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Mahi Khan, known by his social media channel and handle MahiNergy, alleged that a woman seated behind him insisted he speak Marathi because he was travelling to Mumbai. When Khan asked her why she was misbehaving, Khan claims the woman threatened him, stating, "Mumbai utariye aapko badtameezi dikhati hu" (When you get off in Mumbai, I'll show you what misbehaviour is).Khan, a Dubai-based YouTuber, said he was in Mumbai for the past three years and was returning there after a visit to Kolkata on work. "I didn't sleep the other night and since it was a 6.25 am flight, I left for the airport at 3.30 am. Once on board the flight, I reclined the seat when the woman's water bottle fell. I immediately apologised, but the woman continued to misbehave with me in Marathi. When I said I didn't understand the language, she snapped back at me and claimed I should speak Marathi since I was going to Mumbai," said Khan in another video.Khan further alleges that the cabin crew present during the incident did not intervene. He recorded the exchange on his mobile phone and shared it online, expressing his concern over the growing normalisation of such behaviour. In his post, Khan urged Air India to take strict action against the individual involved, stating, "These people should be banned. No passenger should feel unsafe or humiliated for simply speaking a different language."The woman involved in the incident has not been publicly identified. TOI reached out to Air India for its reaction, but the airline was yet to issue a statement at the time of the report going to print. Many netizens condemned the woman's actions, calling it an infringement on personal freedom and linguistic diversity. "Did this lady speak in Bengali when she was in Kolkata?" commented Viswanath Natarajan in a social media post.
