Kolkata: Senior resident doctors at the state-run Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Govt Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia staged a five-hour pen-down strike on Friday to protest against the alleged assault on a junior doctor earlier this week by a group, led by a police home guard.The strike began at 9 am in front of the hospital superintendent's office, with doctors demanding better safety for medical staff, particularly women, and a threat-free workplace. One of the protesters alleged "no visible improvement in the security system or efforts to ensure a conducive atmosphere for medical professionals on campus" even after the assault on Oct 20.A spokeswoman alleged the authorities had failed to restore confidence among healthcare workers, even after the rape and murder at RG Kar. So far, three persons, including police home guard Babulal Sk, have been arrested for the Oct 20 attack.
