Manipal: A comprehensive study, conducted by Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, has found no evidence of a decline in semen quality among Indian men from southern states over the past 17 years. The findings, published in the American Journal of Men's Health, challenge global concerns about a steady fall in sperm counts. The research analysed semen profiles of nearly 12,000 men who visited the University Andrology Laboratory for fertility evaluation between 2006 and 2022. Covering key parameters such as sperm count, motility, viability, and structure, the study -- one of the largest and longest of its kind in India -- found no significant changes in these indicators over time.Dr Anil Bhat, dean of KMC Manipal, underscored the importance of the findings, noting that long-term data in male reproductive health are rare and crucial for patient counselling. "This study offers valuable insight into male fertility trends in the Indian context," he said.Lead researcher Prof Satish Adiga, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Embryology at KMC Manipal, stated that the data provide strong reassurance. "Our findings indicate no alarming decline in semen quality among men from southern India. While infertility remains a concern, factors other than a time-linked drop in sperm quality may be responsible," he explained.Co-author Prof Stefan Schlatt, director of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Andrology at the University of Münster, Germany -- a WHO reference centre for male fertility -- called the dataset "scientifically significant." He added, "This data challenges the idea of a universal sperm crisis and underlines the need for regional perspectives in understanding male reproductive health."The research team also included Dr Meitei, Dr Dhakshanya, and Dr Shubhashree from KMC, along with other collaborators.
