Kolkata: Police on Thursday arrested Kakdwip resident Narayan Halder for allegedly desecrating a Goddess Kali idol. Halder, police said, had confessed to the crime and said he was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident. Police added that they are investigating if there were others involved in the desecration of the idol.The incident triggered a political back-and-forth on Wednesday with BJP accusing the state govt of "shielding culprits". Police said locals blocked the national highway in protest and refused to proceed with immersion rituals. Cops intervened and brought the situation under control, but not before another controversy was triggered when they reportedly took the idol into a prison van.On Thursday, police issued a detailed statement saying: "Yesterday, we received information about a disturbance at a Maa Kali temple in Suryanagar GP at around 5.30 pm. The police immediately reached the spot and spoke to the puja committee members. They stated they would file a complaint after the idol immersion and the accused should be arrested thereafter.""However, soon after, a group of outsiders entered the area, and the number of people increased as individuals from neighbouring villages joined. Later, they carried the idol to the national highway, completely blocking the road.""We immediately deployed our forces and tried to speak to the agitators but the highway remained blocked. Public vehicles and ambulances were stuck in traffic. When we requested the protestors to clear the road, they became agitated and began pelting stones. At that point, our top priority was to protect the idol of Maa Kali and the sanctity associated with it. We were also receiving continuous requests from stranded people to clear the highway. They even requested that the idol be taken into safe custody," police said."We acted swiftly, removed the idol and placed it in a police van to ensure its protection. The entire stretch of the road was blocked and to prevent any damage to the idol during the stone-pelting, we decided to secure it inside the van. After that we cleared the area and conducted continuous patrolling. We then returned to the police station, registered specific cases and initiated an investigation," police added.Referring to AI-generated images circulating of Maa Kali in front of a prison van, police said, "We wish to reiterate that the sanctity of Maa Kali is of utmost importance to us. We request everyone to not spread misinformation or fall for any propaganda. The police will take every necessary step to safeguard the sanctity of Maa Kali." Police added that two cases have been registered, one for the road blockade and another for vandalism.
