Hyderabad: City's daily commute is turning into a test of patience for thousands of office-goers and students, as overcrowded Telangana State Road Transport Corporation buses struggle to keep up with rising demand.Routes connecting major residential hubs with IT corridors and commercial centres are seeing long queues, packed buses, and extended waiting times, especially during morning and evening peak hours. Despite the surge in passengers, the number of buses and frequency of trips have remained largely unchanged, leaving commuters frustrated."During office hours, it's almost impossible to get inside a bus from Miyapur or LB Nagar. The crowd is overwhelming, and sometimes the bus doesn't even stop," said Anjali Sharma, a software employee from Kondapur.Routes serving IT hubs such as Hi-Tec City, Gachibowli, Madhapur, and the Financial District are reported to be the most affected. "TGSRTC needs to increase the number of buses during peak hours. The current frequency simply doesn't match the city's growing commuter base," added Suresh Kumar, who travels daily from Dilsukhnagar to Madhapur.Transport experts warn that city's rapid urban expansion demands urgent improvements in public transport. "It's very unfortunate that public transport is not being developed at the pace the city needs. Five years ago, we had around 3,800 buses, and instead of increasing, the numbers have been dropping sharply. Public transport is a necessity. Ideally, one bus should serve around 1,000 passengers a day, but in Hyderabad, that is not the case," said TS Reddy, a retired official from the Central Road Research Institute.Acknowledging the challenge, a senior TSRTC official stated, "We are aware of the issue and are working to rationalise routes and add more services where feasible. Efforts are also being made to induct new buses to meet commuter demand."Currently, TSRTC operates a fleet of 3,151 buses across Hyderabad and Secunderabad, completing over 32,000 trips daily from 25 depots, covering 8.5 lakh kilometres and transporting more than 25 lakh passengers each day.
